i receive income support can i rent a room out in my house or will it affect my benefits?
I am thinking of renting out a room in my house for some additional income. I receive income support and am worried that my benefits will be affected.
Only if the housing authority or whomever you get benefits from comes to your home to check up on your living conditions would you be caught. Or, if you claim this rental income on your taxes. Technically, anytime your income changes, you are supposed to tell your caseworker so they can adjust your benefits. You would be taking a chance of losing your benefits entirely if they were to find out. The thing you have to remember is if the person you rent to knows you are on benefits, and if for some reason you two get into some sort of disagreement or falling out and they want to make your life heck, they can call and report you for fraud.
